In demand: Dr Te handing out the free Chinese herbs outside the varsity.
MORE than 700 people to date have been given free herbs consisting of herbal tea, thanks to an effort initiated by the Chinese Medicine Task Force of Malaysia (Covid-19). Led by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Chinese Medicine Department head Assoc Prof Dr Te Kian Keong, the task force has been providing the herbs to the public, as well as Covid-19 and discharged patients, since March last year. The free Chinese herbs will be given based on the requester’s health condition and tongue assessment. Those interested in getting them can register online, said Dr Te.
“More than 40 patients have sought Chinese medicine services from the task force after being discharged from the hospital, ” he said. According to Dr Te, there had been an increase in demand for the Chinese herbs recently due to the rise of Covid-19 cases.
“Some 20 to 30 individuals of all races signed up to receive the herbs in a day, ” he said.
At present, the free Chinese herbs have been distributed to Covid-19 high-risk areas in Kota Kinabalu, Johor Baru, Klang and the Klang Valley. The area will be expanded to benefit more people in the future, said a press release on Feb 24.
The effort is made in collaboration with the Federation of Chinese Physicians and Medicine Dealers Association of Malaysia, GHHS Chinese Medical Centre, and Peking Tongrentang (M) Sdn Bhd. “The herbal tea consists of Bo He (Herba Menthae), Sang Ye (Folium Mori), Huo Xiang Ye (Herba Agastachis), He Ye (Folium Nelumbinis), Dan Zhu Ye (Herba Lophatheri), Sheng Yi Yi Ren (Semen Coicis), Fu Ling (Poria), and Sheng Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae). Other Chinese herbal medicines will be provided based on the individual’s health assessment, ” said Dr Te.
